Our friends on the right fringe, of course. In their desperation to turn the Islamic center in Lower Manhattan into this year’s wedge issue, Palin, Gingrich and the rest of the irresponsibles might be delivering big for Al Qaeda.
Some counterterrorism experts say the anti-Muslim sentiment that has saturated the airwaves and blogs in the debate over plans for an Islamic center near ground zero in Lower Manhattan is playing into the hands of extremists by bolstering their claims that the United States is hostile to Islam.Opposition to the center by prominent politicians and other public figures in the United States has been covered extensively by the news media in Muslim countries. At a time of concern about radicalization of young Muslims in the West, it risks adding new fuel to Al Qaeda’s claim that Islam is under attack by the West and must be defended with violence, some specialists on Islamic militancy say.
“I know people in this debate don’t intend it, but there are consequences for these kinds of remarks,” said Brian Fishman, who studies terrorism for the New America Foundation here.
There’s more from the New York Times…
Claire Teitelman writes a great article for ThinkProgress about the Ex-Speaker latest venture:
Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich is notorious for his active — and sometimes controversial — musings on Twitter. But not only does he have a Twitter feed in English, but he has also started one in Spanish.
He posted his first tweet in Spanish at 1:08 pm on July 9, noting that he would be on Neil Cavuto’s Fox show at 4:05 to discuss Pelosi’s $16 million “mouse” project. He also asked his readers what he should say about the subject. While some of his tweets on the Spanish-language feed are the same as on the English version, others are original content.
But here’s the reason why I suspect that his effort has nothing to do with linguistic appreciations and all to do with political opportunism. This is from the same article, quoting Gingrich, who has fiercely opposed bilingual education:
“The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto.”
Hypocrisy is alive and well in Newtland. Nothing new here.
What’s Espanol? Does anyone know what it means. Maybe his computer probably does not have Custom Characters.
We’re sending the Ex-Speaker some Ñ’s.
